Integrative Medicine
What is diabetes?
Diabetes is a condition that occurs when your body doesn’t make insulin (Type 1) or when you're insulin-resistant (Type 2). Uncontrolled diabetes can lead to heart attack, stroke, blindness, kidney failure, peripheral arterial disease, and possibly death.
With Type 1 diabetes, you have to take insulin daily. But, with Type 2 diabetes, you can change your body's use of insulin with dietary and lifestyle changes. Uncontrolled late-stage Type 2 diabetes might require medication, but if you're diagnosed early and work with Dr. King to improve your health, your chances of controlling the disease are excellent.
How does integrative medicine for diabetes work?
Abraham's Mark Comprehensive Wellness Center performs both conventional and functional risk assessments to determine what kind of changes you need to make when you have Type 2 diabetes. In addition to considering your traditional risk factors like obesity and sedentary lifestyle, Dr. King recommends nutritional and functional testing such as:
- Cell energy and detox balance
- Nutritional testing
- Oxidative stress analysis
- Glucose with insulin production test
- Heart health
Your comprehensive examination reveals what kind of changes you need to make to control your Type 2 diabetes. With support from Dr. King, you can implement changes, including nutrition and lifestyle changes, that might prevent you from needing traditional medication at all.
What is hypertension?
Hypertension is a condition in which your blood pressure, the force of blood inside your veins, is too high. Systolic blood pressure, the first number in your blood pressure measurement, represents pressure generated during heart contractions. Diastolic blood pressure, the second number in your blood pressure measurement, represents pressure between heart contractions.
According to the American Heart Association, blood pressure categories are:
- Healthy: less than 120/less than 80
- Elevated: 120-129/less than 80
- Stage 1 hypertension: 130-139 or 80-89
- Stage 2 hypertension: 140 or higher or 90 or higher
Hypertension can lead to heart attack, stroke, and heart failure if not controlled. This condition affects every part of your body, which is why it’s so important to take a whole-body approach to treatment.
How does integrative medicine for hypertension work?
Traditional therapy usually starts with medication, but at Abraham’s Mark Comprehensive Wellness Center, Dr. King combines conventional and functional assessments to find alternative treatments. Assessments include:
- Cell energy and detox balance
- Urine and/or fecal heavy metal testing
- Oxidative stress analysis
- Impedance cardiography
- Nutritional assessment
With lifestyle and dietary changes, Dr. King can help you reduce your blood pressure, often with no medication or significantly less medication.
