Pain Management
Why are pills ineffective for pain management?
Many men and women with chronic pain use anti-inflammatory pills or even narcotic medications for pain relief. Still, it's common to need more and more medication to get any relief as time goes on. Plus, these types of drugs interfere with healing and make injured or damaged tissue weaker.
In the long term, pain pills can increase your pain because they also destroy joint health and reduce your whole-body wellness. For all of these reasons, Dr. King recommends a natural solution called prolotherapy instead.
What is prolotherapy?
Prolotherapy is an injection treatment for pain. Instead of temporary pain relief, prolotherapy strengthens your damaged tissue so you can return to full function, permanently pain-free.
Prolotherapy stimulates your body to heal itself by sending immune cells to speed up your recovery. Ligament and tendon weakness is often an underlying cause of poor joint function and pain, and the prolotherapy solution also contains proliferants that strengthen your ligaments and tendons to enhance healing.
Is prolotherapy the same as cortisone injections?
No, the two treatments are very different. Cortisone is a steroid that reduces inflammation. But, cortisone limits bodywide inflammation and weakens your body's soft tissues overall. This can slow your healing, and can even cause a new injury.
Cortisone injections are a short-term solution for pain. While they reduce pain temporarily, they have very damaging effects on your body. Prolotherapy helps you heal instead of weakening your body.
What conditions can prolotherapy help with?
Prolotherapy is a flexible treatment that can help with any chronic or acute soft tissue damage or injury.
Some of the many reasons that patients may get prolotherapy include:
- Neck pain
- Knee pain
- Back pain
- Sciatica
- Extremity (hand or foot) pain
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Headaches and migraines
- Shoulder pain, such as rotator cuff tear
- Tendinitis
- Arthritis
- Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMJ)
- Torn meniscus
- Degenerative disc disease
- Herniated disc
For all of these conditions and many others, prolotherapy outperforms traditional approaches like anti-inflammatory drugs, cortisone injections, and invasive surgeries.
How many prolotherapy sessions do I need?
Most patients get excellent results with a short series of prolotherapy sessions. Many factors unique to your situation, including your nutrition, your underlying conditions, and the severity of your injury, can influence the recovery process. Dr. King designs a customized prolotherapy plan to help you heal as fast as possible.
